Jeffrey Foucault
I frequently check the Mountain Stage schedule to see what artist will
be performing there, in hopes that gas prices will drop enough that I
can afford a freakin' ticket. Several acts that I like will be coming
to Mountain Stage in August: Odetta, Vienna Teng, Duncan Sheik, Edwin
McCain, and Jeffrey Foucault.
Jeffrey Foucault is an artist that I've heard and more often heard of,
but hadn't paid much attention to until recently. Mountain Stage has
introduced me to many of my favourite artists, so I figured it was
time to pay attention to this one. And now I feel like an idiot for
overlooking him before. I really hope I can make it to the concert.
Foucault's voice and musical style are very similiar to Peter Mulvey,
whom he has recorded with in the past. He names everyone from Little
Richard and The Smiths to Don Williams and Gordon Lightfoot (both of
which have performed on Mountain Stage) as his influences.
His website has several mp3s for download. You can get two or three
mp3s from each of his albums on this page. I especially recommend the
following songs:
Jeffrey Foucault - Ghost Repeater (mp3)
"Ghost Repeater" is the title track from his new album. It has a
roots-rock, big skies road trip kind of vibe... like classic Tom
Petty, or Ryan Adams sans pretension (which I guess would be
Whiskeytown;).
Jeffrey Foucault - Moonshiner (mp3)
"Moonshiner" is a traditional song that's been covered well by Cat
Power and The Chieftains (featuring Allison Moorer). While those other
versions have a more eerie, vintage sound, Foucalt's version of the
song could be a working man's anthem from any decade or century.
